Abstract:
Search for New Blue Phosphorescent Iridium Complexes for
OLED

University)
Recently we have conducted investigations to develop novel highly
efficient deep blue phosphorescent ( at ~440 nm) iridium complexes which might
be useful for full color OLED displays and efficient WOLEDs. Iridium complexes
attract continous attention as emitting-dopant materials for OLEDs because of
their phosphorescence emssion of high quantum efficiency.
Based on the earlier reports1 and observations, we deigned
new iridium complexes which contain 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-methylpyridine,
2-(2,4-difluoro-3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-4-methylpyridine, and
2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-2-N,N- dimethyl-aminopyridine as main ligands,
and the new substituted 2-pyridyltriazolate derivatives, imidazole
carboxylates of low HOMO and high LUMO energy level 2 as
ancillary ligands. The main ligands and the new ancillary ligands were prepared
following a modified method of the reported.1,3 The biscyclometalated
Ir complexes of the main ligands were prepared by a conventional two-step
reaction via m-chloro-bridged dimer. Utilizing the synthesized five biscyclometalated
Ir complexes and eight ancillary ligands new blue-emitting heteroleptic Iridium
(III) complexes were synthesized.
Their structures were fully characterized by spectroscopy and single
crystal x-ray diffraction. Their UV-vis absorption and emission spectra,
electrochemical properties, and phosphorescent quantum yields were measured.
In the lecture will be discussed our successful efforts to develop new deep blue
phosphorescent iridium complexes mainly through structural modification of their
ancillary lignds.
