■ Abstract :
Mechanical instabilities such as buckles, folds and cracks exist in nature and can span orders of magnitude in length scales, from kilometers to nanometers. In this seminar, I will show how to develop processing and computation tools to utilize multiscale instabilities in designing structured mechanomaterials (i.e., the metamaterials with programmable force-geometry-function relationships), in particular for two major fields: (1) mesoscale dynamic mechanomaterials for soft robots and machines with an autonomous control; and (2) micro- and nanoscale static mechanomaterials for renewable energy applications. For the section of (1), I will demonstrate the operation of mechanofluidic logic devices by system-level instabilities for electronics-free, autonomous movements of soft robots. For (2), strain-enabled phase control of transition metal chalcogenides will be discussed following the strategy to use the designed materials in electrochemical water splitting.
