Today’s display technology is developing to maximize its visual reproduction capabilities. Beside of size and resolution, color is very important factor to realize images in the display. According to Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect, the display quality is increased as increase of color gamut without increase of luminance. It means that the pure color of quantum dot is very powerful to upgrade the display quality, without increase of luminance.
Most works have been performed on Cd-based QDs, however the toxicity problem has restricted their commercial application even though their superior properties. Therefore, Samsung developed more environmentally friendly InP based QDs. However, the covalent bonding character of InP has abundant chance to generate deep trap sites compared with the ionic bonding character of Cd based quantum dot. We improved InP based QD to exhibit more than 95% quantum efficiency by control of defect on core and core/shell interface, and by uniform shape and size distribution. The talk will cover the internally developed Cd-free product in Samsung.
