On October 28, 2023, ‘the 1st Alumni Association Meeting of the KAIST MSE’ was held. At this meeting, we had time to share ‘the developed present’ of KAIST and discuss our future operational directions.

On April 18, 2023, Merck visited to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of KAIST. KAIST and Merck had a great time to talk about various cooperation plans through the partnership meeting. Recently, as KAIST and Merck have been proceeding with active cooperation in Biology, we are looking forward to the growth of other fields of materials engineering.

On June 30, with Nanyang Technical University (NTU), we held ‘KAIST-NTU Joint Workshop’ at the department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) of NTU. 9 professors including Seungbum Hong and Lam Yeng Ming, the chiefs of each DMSE of KAIST and NTU, attended the Workshop to discuss about the future cooperation methods.

On July 14, Seungbum Hong, the chief of the DMSE of KAIST, visited Argonne National Laboratory located in Illionois, US, and held a ‘KAIST-Argonne National Laboratory Cooperation Meeting’. At this meeting, prof. Hong discussed cooperation plans between two institutions with Paul Kearns, the head of Argonne National Laboratory. As a specific plan, they decided to update the contents of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in 2017 and further expand the exchange of human resources.

Prof. Hong said “Both institutions decided to renew the previous memorandum of understanding (MOU), and we requested Paul Kearns to visit KAIST in the near future.”

Prof. Dong Hwa Seo joined the faculty as a professor. He joined on May 1, 2023. He majored in Computational materials science, Data-driven materials discovery, and Li-ion batteries.

On August 22, Global Singularity M3I3 Workshop was held at Multimedia Hall.

On July 1, prof. Il-Doo Kim was appointed as the executive editor of ‘ACS Nano’, a prestigious journal in Nanoscience.

He said “Through my activities as the executive editor with papers submitted in the fields of sensors and energy, I will contribute to raising the stature of our university and enhancing international exchange opportunities not only for KAIST members but also for researchers working in the Nanoscience in Korea.

On July 1, prof. Hyuck Mo Lee was appointed as the head of directorate of Basic Research in Science and Engineering, National Research Foundation of Korea. He is responsible for investigation, analysis, generalization, and control about research demands, technology forecasts, and research trends in each field proceeded by the government.

Jueun Sim presented a poster on “Whole-body ExM: Super-resolution imaging of the whole mouse embryos” in Samsung Global Technology Symposium 2023, held in Seoul, March 21, 2023. This presentation won the Best Poster Award at the Samsung Global Technology Symposium 2023.

Ji-Sang received the Poster Award at the Global Conference on Innovation Materials 2023 (GCIM 2023) hosted by K-MRS.

A workshop for faculty members and staffs was held in Busan on June 22 (Thursday) and June 23 (Friday). 22 professors and staff members attended to have a deep discussion about major issues on the development of our department.

Hyunjong Yim started to work as a staff member in Dept. MSE from July 1, 2023. he managed Safety, facilities and Asset Management of the department.

Hyekyeong Lee started to work as a staff member in Dept. MSE from August 1, 2023. she managed Financial Affairs of the department.

Dahye Shin started to work as a staff member in Dept. MSE from September 14, 2023. she managed Undergraduate Student Affairs, Int'l Graduate Admission, Expert research personnel, and Document Management of the department.
