2021 MSE Signature Project - KAIST-NTU Joint Workshop (2021/09/30-10/01)

Seokwoo Jeon

KAIST-Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Joint Workshop was held from September 30 to October 1 via Online Zoom Webinar. The KAIST-NTU Joint Workshop is one of the most important projects as part of the Global Alliance Program, which has been promoted to improve international awareness by establishing active and systematic international cooperation programs and diversifying overseas partner organizations.

01

The purpose of the KAIST-NTU workshop hosted by our Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) is to promote joint degrees and exchanges between KAIST and NTU. The workshop also aimed to share information on the latest achievement and research trends in the fields of materials engineering, that cover topics such as the material design with machine learning, development of soft electronic applications, and discovery of next-generation energy materials and functional materials.

Prof. Seokwoo Jeon served as general chair of this workshop and Prof. Seung-bum Hong served as co-chair. Prof. Steve Park, Prof. Jiheong Kang, and Prof. Himchan Cho also co-organized the event as program chairs.

Starting from the introduction of department status by Prof. Seung-bum Hong (Head of DMSE, KAIST) and Prof. Lam Yeng Ming (Head of DMSE, NTU), the research vision of 18 professors from each school were shared in detail, spurring all participants to investigate and discover various research topics that can bring global impact.

In particular, Prof. Pooi See Lee, Prof. Jiheong Kang, Prof. Xiaodong Chen, and Prof. Steve Park had shared their perspective on soft electronics from materials to devices in the first session. Also, Prof. Seungbum Hong, Prof. Shuzhou Li, Prof. Hyuckmo Lee, and Prof. Kedar Hippalgaonkar had provided recent issues and ideas in the field of machine learning. For last session of the first day, Prof. Nripan Mathews, Prof. Byungha shin, Prof. Lydia Helena Wong, and Prof. Himchan Cho presented their very recent research outcome on perovskite solar cells. On the second day, Prof. Seokwoo Jeon introduced a photolithographic 3D nanopatterning platform for nanoapplications, followed by presentations by Prof. Alex Yan and Prof. Jihun Oh on the electrocatalytic system. In the last session, recent advances in antiviral peptides, new classes of 2D materials, and ‘waste-to-resource’ innovations were discussed by Prof. Nam-Joon Cho, Prof. Kibum Kang, and Prof. Dalton Tay, respectively. Also, discussions on the presentations took place for strengthening future collaborations between KAIST and NTU.

This workshop was sponsored by the Center for the Control of Material Properties by 3D Nanostructure Design (Director: Prof. Seokwoo Jeon, KAIST) and KAIST BK21FOUR Project.
