Prof. Keon Jae Lee published a special issue of international academic journal to commemorate
the 50th anniversary of our university
A renowned international academic journal ‘Advanced Materials’ published a special issue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of KAIST. The September special issue of "Advanced Materials", in which Prof. Keon Jae Lee of the Department of Material Science and Engineering participated as the editor-in-chief, consisted of review papers by 17 KAIST professors who are making outstanding achievements in the future 4th industrial revolution related fields, such as Sensors, artificial intelligence, next generation electronics and biotechnology.

Prof. Seungbum Hong receives the “Grand prize for Learning & Teaching Innovation Awards” of KAST (2020/07/30)
Prof. Seungbum Hong of the Department of Material Science and Engineering, who won the Grand Prize in Lee Soo-young professor Learning Innovation Award, has been recognized for his outstanding achievements, such as practicing creative teaching methods through designing and running Flipped Learning lecture since 2017.

Prof. Sang Ouk Kim’s Joint Research Group, Awarded at the 10th ‘KINC Fusion Research Award’ (2020/05/19)
KAIST Institution for Nanocentry conducted the 10th ‘KINC Fusion Research Award’ ceremony on May 19. Prof. Sang Ouk Kim and a joint research group led by Prof. Kim were awarded as the winner of the “Best Convergence Research Award”, which selects researchers with the highest qualityl of research content and the convergence of the research team.

POSCO TJ Park Foundation Selected Prof. Jihyeon Yeom for the TJ Park Science Fellowship(2020/09/16)
POSCO TJ Park Foundation selected Prof. Jihyeon Yeom for the POSCO Science Fellowship. The fellowship supports young professors who will lead the future of Korea in applied sciences which could be the new growth engine of industrial technology in Korea.

Retirement Ceremony
Prof. Kwangsoo No joined KAIST in August 1988 and worked for 31 years and 7 months. He greatly contributed to the development of science, technology, and human resources. He retired in February 29, 2020, but the retirement lecture was postponed to June due to COVID-19.
Prof. Chong-Ook Park retired on August 31, 2020, after his long service to scientific and technological advancements and student education at KAIST. He was appointed as an emeritus professor on September 1, 2020. He gave a retirement lecture, received an appreciation plaque, and gave a commemorative statement for conveying our gratitude for becoming an honorary professor.

< The secret of viruses with KAIST > Online Special Lecture Held
Under the theme "Secret of Viruses," introduced by KAIST for elementary, middle and high school students who resumed school work a program was from May 20, which was the program is designed to help students understand the characteristics of viruses and infectious diseases and encourage them to actively comply with prevention rules in their daily lives.

Online-Care for Undergraduate “Happy Birthday Coupon”
"Happy Birthday Lunch" events were planned and conducted for counseling between professors and students in a comfortable atmosphere, but because of difficulties in offline meetings due to Corona 19, we sent birthday coupons to 84 undergraduate students who had their birthdays between February and August. Through such “Online-Care,” we wanted to inspire a sense of belonging as a Department of Material Science and Engineering student, despite the difficulties in direct face-to-face meetings.

2020 Online-Orientation for Freshmen of Undergraduates (2020/08/27)
A Orientation and Opening Party for the freshmen undergraduates were held on August 27. In line with the untact era, 34 freshmen in 2020 attended the online welcome party with the participation of Chan-beom Park, the head of the department, and 11 professors. It was a place of communication through group mentoring and a useful time to promote friendship through fun games. K-Materials Student Reporters launch
Starting in July 2020, student reporters were selected to support the production of departmental newsletters, English pamphlets, promotion of the department's website and SNS, including the K-Materials YouTube channel to improve departmental visibility.

K-Materials internal and external public relations
For the promotion of the K-Materials YouTube channel, we provided incentives to laboratories for YouTube videos with the highest views as of the end of August 2020. It was a one-time event for the impact of the department's promotion, and we are planning the management plan to direction of expanding the promotion of this channel on its own in the future.

Laboratory Safety Inspection by Walk-Through
Inspection was the Safety Committee by the twio day walk throurh on June 23-24. The goal is to inspect each lab once a year, and four laboratories will be inspected on the second Monday of every month.

Faculty Meeting for the 2nd Half of 2020 (2020/07/23)
The faculty meeting for the Second half of 2020 was held at Juheul Conference Room on July 23, 2020. It was the first meeting between the newly appointed team leader Hyunsook Min and the staff of the department. Staff members hold regular meetings twice a year to promote harmony among members in a comfortable atmosphere while having a meal. The meeting for the first half of 2020 was held on January 22.

Su-min Shin selected as “Winners of the Employee of the Month Award” (2020/09)
Ms. Su-min Shin, a staff member in Dept. MSE from July 12, 2007, has been contributing to the research activities of KAIST members by offering user education and analysis service of equipment for joint use. In addition, she has been professionally responsible for the past 13 years, contributing to improving internal and external user satisfaction by providing reliable services.
