Flexible and Nanobio Device Laboratory

  • Research work done by Prof. Keon Jae Lee, and his research team was introduced in KBS (June 2018). The work was also announced in prominent international media such as Eurekalert, Physorg, Semiconductor Today, Chemie, and Ofweek.
    A research team led by Prof. Keon Jae Lee from the Department of Materials Science has developed a low cost production technology for thin-film blue flexible vertical micro LEDs (f-VLEDs). The blue GaN f-VLEDs achieved optical power density (~30 mW/mm2) three times higher than that of lateral micro LEDs, and a device lifetime of 100,000 hours by reducing heat generation. These blue f-VLEDs could be conformally attached to the curved skin and brains for wearable devices, and stably operated by wirelessly transferred electrical energy.
  • Research work done by Prof. Keon Jae Lee, and his research team was announced in prominent international media such as Nanowerk, Science Daily, Eureka, Physorg, Photonics, and Azon (August 2018).
    A research team led by Prof. Keon Jae Lee from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Prof. Daesoo Kim from the Department of Biological Sciences has developed flexible drug delivery device with controlled release for the personalized medicine. The fabricated device has mechanical flexibility while maintaining the capability of precise administration of exact dosage at desired time. The core technology is to make freestanding gold capping layer directly on top of the microreservoir with drug, which is not possible using conventional microfabrication. The flexible drug delivery device can be wirelessly powered which is suitable for personalized medicine platform. The team implanted the flexible drug delivery system to the brain of live mouse and confirmed that the brain epilepsy was treated by anti-epileptic drug release.

Materials for Sustainable Technology Laboratory

Professor Kwangsoo No’s class of Materials Design and Manufacturing (MS412) sent four undergraduate students to Vietnam for IoT education using Arduino microprocessor, sensors and actuators. The project is supported by the Global Shearing Funding of KAIST. They went to Vietnam for joining in the seminars of Department of Chemistry, academic discussion and improving STEM(IoT) education. Four students are invited to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education (280 An Duong Vuong, Ward 4, District 5, HCM City) and the four high schools in Ho Chi Minh City from August 23th to 28th, 2018. During these days, they joined in the seminars at Department of Chemistry to introduce Arduino Design Projects to the students to improve STEM education at high schools in Hi Chi Minh City.

New equipment
  • New Atomic Force Microscope, Cypher ES is available. The Cypher ES is designed for high resolution imaging and Fast Scanning of material surfaces. Two high resolution pieozoelectric scanners capable of measuring areas up to 30 µm x 30 µm with a vertical range of ~ 4 µm are available for imaging. The S-scanner can image samples in air and liquids. The ES scanner for imaging samples in liquids or controlled gas environments has a gas perfusion cell, liquid perfusion cell, heater sample cell (ambient up to 250 deg C), cooling and heating sample cell (0-120 deg C), and controlled environment CAFM cell. The instrument has blueDrive for photothermal excitation of the cantilever which provides a clean drive response of the cantilever for tapping mode applications in air and liquids. Sample size is limited to ~ 1 x 1 inch mounted on 15 mm magnetic steel platens. This instrument is in an acoustic and air temperature controlled housing. Quantitative probe calibration is available on this instrument.

    Imaging Modes: Tapping Mode, Contact Mode, Force Spectroscopy, Fast Scanning Tapping Mode, Phase Imaging, Quantitative Nanomechanical Measurements, AMFM, Electrochemistry, Scanning Kelvin Probe, CAFM (ORCA and dual gain ORCA), Force Modulation, blueDrive photothermal cantilever excitation, and Imaging in Liquids, controlled gas environments and controlled temperature.

  • Prof. Byeong-Soo Bae is invited to Display week 2018 for presenting about “Advanced Materials/Processes Enabling Displays of the Future” and “Smartphone Market And Technology Outlook”. These invitation is for only promising researchers, so it is great honor to be presented in this conference.
  • Yun Hyeon Kim and Hyunhwan Lee from the Byeong-Soo Bae Laboratory participated 2018 MRS Spring Meeting hosted by Materials Research Society (MRS) held in Arizona, U.S.A (2nd-6th, April, 2018).   • Junho Jang and Young-Woo Lim from the Byeong-Soo Bae Laboratory participated 2018 Spring Conference of the Polymer Society of Korea held in Daejeon, Korea (4th~6th, April, 2018). Junho Jang presented the subject of “Linear Structured Siloxane Encapsulated Quantum Dot Hybrid Composite for Stable Color Converting Materials”. Young-Woo Lim presented the subject of “Thermally Stable Glass Fabric Reinforced Siloxane Hybrid (GFRHybrimer) films for Flexible Display Substrate Film”.
  • Prof. Byeong-Soo Bae and his group member Yun Hyeok Kim, InJun Lee and Hyunhwan Lee participated 2018 Spring Conference of the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials held in Jeju island (25th~27th, April, 2018). Yun Hyeok Kim presented the subject of “Novel Synthesis and Characterization of Methacrylate Siloxane Hybrid Materials with a Tunable Molecular Design”. InJun Lee presented the subject of “Fluorinated Epoxy Siloxane Hybrid Materials with Low Dielectric for Interlayer Dielectric”. And Hyunhwan Lee presented the subject of “Highly Improved Light Conversion Efficiency of Quantum Dot Film via Haze Controllable Glass-fabric Reinforced Quantum Dot Hybrimer Film”. In addition, all the group members visited the conference, cheered the presenters, and held a lab workshop together in Jeju Island for group friendship.
