Fundamentals of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

and its Application in Energy Issues

In this talk, I will review the fundamentals of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), identifying the advantages and pitfalls and highlighting errors that I have seen after reviewing many manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.  Of course, the authors will remain anonymous.   I will then illustrate the application of EIS in characterizing the electrochemical processes that occur in the dissolution of lithium and aluminum in concentrated alkaline solutions and the hydrogen electrode reaction on platinum electrocatalysts.  Finally, I will describe the use of EIS to characterize porous, electronically conductive (Ebonite) noble metal catalyst supports for the oxygen electrode reaction of the type being considered in fuel cells.  The power power of EIS in exploring electrochemical processes will be illustrated by Reaction Mechanism Analysis.
