Nanostructured materials such as nanocrystals possessing both magnetic and photonic functionalities are of emerging scientific and technological interests. For example, magnetic Fe3O4 – photonic ZnO core-shell nanocrystals were synthesized chemically and applied in dendritic cell (DC) based cancer immunotherapy. These core-shell nanocrystals can deliver carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) into dendritic cells while simultaneously acting as an imaging agent. We report the tunable synthesis of Fe3O4–ZnO hybrid core-shell nanoparticles as prepared through controlled sequential nanoemulsion processes. The characterization shows the orderly variations of the structural, magnetic, photonic properties of the nanocrystals versus the nanoshell thickness. The nanocrystals reveal structural features unique to the core-shell design and exhibit well-defined superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature. In opposite to the decreasing magnetization, both bandgap and induced surface emissions depend strongly on the increasing nanoshell thickness. |
