Printed Electro-Mechanical Systems (PEMS) Research Center in Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) has been investigating printing and coating processes for application in printed electronics. We are working toward the realization of continuous manufacturing systems using printing, coating, and patterning processes. PEMS Research Center now focuses on the development of printing processes and equipments, for printed electronics, including metal jet, inkjet, roll-to-roll printing, Electro-Static Deposition (ESD), microcontact printing, screen printing, and so on. Using inkjet technology, fine line pattern under 30 μm is obtained and using ESD technology, around 10 microns are achieved. Regarding metal jet system, we present a design, analysis, fabrication and performance test of the novel molten metal Drop-on-Demand (DoD) inkjet system, which can eject the droplet of the high-density and high-temperature-melting materials such as lead-free molten metal solder. Also, the microcontact printing process using h-PDMS stamp and SAM made it possible to fabricate printed OTFT with channel lengths down to sub-micron, and reduced the process by 20 steps compared with photolithography. Color filter for LCD display is printed by using screen printing method and critical parameters, for printing fine pattern in large area through screen printing method, are examined.
