 Abstract :

Potential difference at the solid-liquid interface triggers electron transport and its rate is strongly affected by physicochemical properties of both phases. However, our understanding regarding electron transport during electrocatalysis is unfortunately insufficient and is still limited to the knowledge developed in the 1950s (e.g., Marcus Theory). While great advances have hitherto been made in the synthesis of electrocatalytic materials and their applications, the interfacial design and the unveiling its role in electrocatalysis become a long-standing goal. In this seminar, I will introduce our ongoing effort to link both solid and liquid structures with electrocatalytic properties. Beyond the conventional structure-activity relationship in the electrode materials, the relationship among the complex interface-consisting components and further the experimental strategy for designing tailored interfaces for the efficient interconversion of electrical and chemical energy will be discussed.
