■ Abstract : X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a useful tool for identifying the oxidation state of the surface, but it could not be operated with gas or aqueous media due to the requirement of an ultrahigh vacuum environment. Near ambient pressure XPS (NAP-XPS) has made an impact on the field of surface science. By allowing gas- and liquid-phase substances in the analysis process, it becomes possible to use XPS as a tool for operando interface science in various applications such as gas-phase catalytic reaction and electrochemistry in a liquid-phase electrolyte.

In this seminar, I would like to introduce recent activities on operando characterization of chemical interfaces based on near ambient pressure XPS, advanced instrumentation for improving the capabilities of currently-operating NAP-XPS facilities (Al Ka lab-source-based NAP-XPS and 8A2 APXPS beamline in PLS-II), and a conceptual design of a beamline for upcoming new synchrotron light source.
