5. 발표내용요약(Abstract)

In the early part of the twentieth century, there were opposing views held and championed by German Chemists Hermann Staudinger (Chemistry Nobel Laureate 1953) and Emil Fischer (Chemistry Nobel Laureate 1902) about the concept of macromolecules. Hermann Staudinger was ultimately proven right and by early 1950s, there were large synthetic polymer and fiber plants in the United States and in Europe. As a result of these developments, synthetic polymers are now ubiquitous and twentieth century is often referred to as the Polymeric Materials Century. The concept of nano materials is now about a quarter of a century old, even though the potential of, and the key issues associated with the nano materials were first articulated by Richard Feynman (Physics Nobel Laureate 1965) in 1959 in a lecture titled, “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom”. Currently, there is a wide array of nano materials, particularly in the research domain, while some are in the commercial domain. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a sub class of nano materials and nano composites are derived from nano materials, and. In this presentation, we will discuss recent developments, issues, challenges, and potential of nano composite materials with selected examples of polymer/CNT films and fibers. It is expected that nano materials and nano composites will have bigger impact on human life in the current century than has been the impact of polymers to-date.
