Energy storage can store energy for a later use and convert it to be a better quality. With these functions, energy storage can help to transform present energy paradigm based on fossil fuels into one based on renewable sources. Among other energy storage technologies, lithium ion batteries are very attractive for achieving this transformation because they cover a wide range of energy spectra from portable devices to electric vehicles to stationary use and have high energy density. The developing lithium ion batteries is very important task. In this talk, I will focus on the development of cathode material, which is a key component for developing lithium ion batteries. In the advent of new applications such as plug-in electric vehicles (PHEV) or electric vehicles (EV), requirements of lithium ion batteries are different from those in portable devices. A lot of attention has gone to LiFePO4 because of its excellent safety and its inexpensive cost. However, LiFePO4 in the cell suffers from poor power capability, which is essential requirement in vehicle applications. I will discuss how to solve this challenge with respect to material scientist’ point of view.
