 Abstract :  


Molecular or atomistic mechanistic understanding of growth and structural changes of materials have not achieved enough at the nanoscale due to a lack of appropriate analytical methods that can obtain in-situ structural information at the nanoscale level. The liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (TEM)offers an opportunity to directly observe chemical reactions that occur in solution. Here we present application of liquid phase TEM to study growth of colloidal nanoparticles. We focus on recent in situ TEM studies of nanoparticle growth which reveal important roles of non-classical crystallization pathways in the entire formation process. Our in-situ observations with liquid phase TEM elucidate different types of non-classical pathway, including two-step nucleation, amorphous-to-crystalline transition, and coalescence of clusters, are involved in different conditions of nanoparticle synthesis. We also present examples of using liquid phase TEM in understanding 3D structures of nanoparticles as well as surface reaction and phase transformation induced by electrochemical reactions.
