Since its establishment in 1971, KAIST has dedicated itself to educating highly qualified student in science and engineering as well as spearheading scientific and technological development for the betterment of the nation and the world. As a result of strenuous efforts to innovate academic systems, KAIST has become the top research-oriented science and engineering university in Korea.

In 1992, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), INC. and US Engineering Education Institution. reported that "the Materials Science and Engineering at KAIST would rank among the top five in the United States in terms of research activity and degrees awarded annually" (ABET report P.36, 1993), The report proves that the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at KAIST is performing world class program for research and development.

In preparation for the rapidly changing global educational enviroment, we established "Vision 2025". To fulfill the Vision 2025 mandate, we have specified three goals. First, we will focus on educating student to be global leaders of the next generation. Second, we will develop an interdisciplinary education system to meet the needs of the times and of the nation. Third, we will support education and research activities even more effectively by reforming the current administration system. We believe that the Vision 2025 will provide a ground work for the next leap forward of our department as a leader in the advancement of science and technology in Korea and in the world during the 21st century.
