Dept. of MSE is ranked 17^th in 2019 World University Ranking by QS. Our department is placed at top 20 for 6 consecutive years.

Prof. Il-Doo Kim is elected as associate editor of   ‘ACS Nano'. Associate editor manages the selection of reviewer and the approval of publishing submitted paper.

Dr. Harm-Anton Klok, the dean of the Dept. of MSE at EPFL was invited for two special lectures in   ‘The KAIST Lectures in Materials Science and Engineering 2018’  and had a meeting with graduate students.

Prof. Alfonso H. W. Ngan, the dean of Dept. ME at the University of Hong Kong was to give an invited talk at our department and held a seminar on November 20.

Ministry of Science, Technology, and Information (MSTI) and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP) selected performances of Prof. Il-Doo Kim and Prof. Byong-Guk Park for  ‘2018 National R&D Top 100 excellent achievement’. Especially, the Ministry selected  ‘Development of the material platform of coupling-based self-assembled organic composite catalyst high sensitive sensor’  of Prof. Il-Doo Kim for top 12.

Clarivate Analytics selected Prof. Sang Ouk Kim as an HCR (Highly Cited Researcher).

POSCO TJ Park Foundation selected Prof. Jong Min Yuk for the TJ Park Science Fellowship. The fellowship supports young professors who will lead the Korean scientific community for 10 years.

Grand prize for technical innovation in 2018 was awarded to Prof. Sang Ouk Kim. Prof. Seokwoo Jeon and Adjunct Prof. Ji Hun Oh(EEWS) won excellence award. Awards were presented at the conference room, College of Engineering on Dec 26, 2018.

Prof. Steve Park (Excellent Lecture Award), Prof. Kwangsoo No (International Cooperation Award), Prof. Sang-Hee Park (Fusion Research Award) won their own award on the 48^th KAIST anniversary.

Professor Emeritus Suk-Joong Kang won  ‘Sung Ok Award’  in the fall conference of the Korean Ceramic Society at Seoul COEX on Nov. 15, 2018.

During their tenure of KAIST, Prof. Soon Hyung Hong and Prof. Byung Tae Ahn has contributed a lot to the development of science and technology as well as training many students. The retirement ceremony was held for both professors on Feb 28, 2019. Many professors and students attended to retirement seminar and showed gratitude to them. Both professors received a memorial tablet and a gift. They were appointed as professor emeritus on Mar. 1, 2019.

President Sung-Chul Shin presented an appreciation plaque to professor emeritus Suk-Joong Kang for his donation to a development fund (￦100,000,000).

The 19^th Korea-Japan Student Symposium was held in KAIST on Nov. 5 to Nov. 9. Six institutes participated in the symposium : Tohoku Univ., Seoul National Univ., DGIST, Chonnam National Univ., KIST and KAIST. In our department, graduate students from Prof. Il-Doo Kim, Prof. Do Kyung Kim, Prof. Sung-Yoon Chung, and Prof. WooChul Jung attended the symposium.

Ji-soo Jang (Prof. Il-Doo Kim) won Minister’s award by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy at  ‘Ceramic day’   ceremony held in Seoul COEX on Nov. 14, 2018.

Young Seok Kim (Prof. Kyung Min Kim) won the excellence award in   ‘2018 Innovative idea competition of semiconductor’  sponsored by SK Hynix, which was held at Walkerhill hotel on Oct. 22, 2018.

Bonjae Koo (Prof. WooChul Jung) and Young-Wan Oh (Prof. Byong-Guk Park) won  ‘Best Paper Award’  for presenting excellent Ph.D. thesis.

Yoonseok Choi (Ph.D. graduate, Prof. WooChul Jung) won   ‘Korea Institute of Materials Science Excellence Paper Award’  sponsored by Korea Institute of Materials Science.

Students with excellent academic performance in 2018 Fall Semester were selected for Dean’s List : Da Dam Kang (Prof. Do Kyung Kim), Junyoung Lee (Prof. Hyuck Mo Lee), Yehlin Cho (Prof. Byungha Shin), Genevieve Ko (Prof. Jong Min Yuk)

Ye Eun Han (Prof. Yoon Sung Nam) was selected for Volunteer & Leadership Honored Student among 2019 graduates.

Career counseling for undergraduate was held at the lawn of Applied Engineering Building. Many professors gave helpful comments on a variety of topics. As many as 30 ~ 40 undergraduates attended the meeting and had a pleasant time having a discussion with the professors.

Information session for Dept. of MSE was held in Dream hall, Chung Moon Soul Building (E16) on Nov. 19, 2018.

Faculty meeting for the first half of 2019 was held in Sweet Beijing. Prof. Hyuck Mo Lee (head of Dept. MSE), Prof. Sung-Yoon Chung (head of EEWS), Prof. Sang-Hee Park (Undergraduate supervisor) and other faculty members from Dept. MSE and EEWS attended the meeting.
