MSE would like to welcome new faculty, Dr. Jae-Byum Chang. He started his new academic career as an associate professor from August 7, 2018, in our department. He received his bachelor's degree from KAIST and a Ph. D. from MIT.
His research topics include super-resolution optical imaging, polymer, hydrogel, and nanofabrication. More information on him and his lab will be introduced thoroughly as "Special Feature" in the newsletter.

KAIST International MSE/CBE Workshop 2018 was held with the theme of 'Big Ideas in Emerging Materials’on August 7, 2018, at Fusion Hall(KI Building). International journal editors from the fields of materials science and engineering, chemistry, and chemical engineering participated as speakers and gave presentations and discussions.
More than 10 experts of materials science and engineering, chemistry and life sciences have attended the workshop, includes Zhenan Bao, Professor of Chemistry in Stanford University, and Vincent Dusastre, editor of Nature Materials.

A panel discussion with graduate students supported by the American Chemical Society was held during KAIST International MSE/CBE Workshop 2018 in the Applied Engineering building (W1). There were heated discussions on writing papers and finding research topics with two editors-in-chief of eminent international journals (Prof. Paul S. Weiss in ACS Nano, Prof. Jilian M. Buriak in Chemistry of Materials).
Prof. Jung WooCheol in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering participated as an anchor. More than 80 post-docs and graduate students from the Department of MSE and CBE attended the ACS panel discussion.

MIT & KAIST MSE Joint Faculty Meeting between three MIT professors and KAIST MSE faculty members including chief of MSE and chief of ERC was held during KAIST International MSE/CBE Workshop 2018.
The status of the MSE department and ERC center, and the research vision of the young professors were shared in detail, which was followed by practical discussions for strengthening collaboration between KAIST and MIT.

KAIST and Northwestern MSE Joint Workshop 2018 was held in KAIST Applied Engineering building (W1) from June 18 ~ 19, 2018. Five Northwestern University professors including the head of the Dept. MSE have participated in the joint workshop.
With annual exchange visit between professors, they had a discussion to select topics for joint research. Based on this, collaborative research will be carried out by dispatching graduate students and postdocs.

About 100 graduate students from six universities in five countries have participated in 2018 Joint Symposium in Materials Science and Engineering for the 21^st Century at University of Science & Technology Beijing (USTB) in China on June 24~ 27, 2018.
Since the first joint symposium in 2003 organized by KAIST, the symposium has expanded to include six schools from five countries (KAIST, POSTECH, University of Science & Technology Beijing, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, Tohoku University in Japan, and National Tsinghua University in Taiwan). The goal of the symposium is to share recent progress in material science and to discuss future collaboration.

Eight professors from the Dept. MSE of KAIST visited Technion in Israel to hold Joint Workshop with the theme of “Advanced Materials for the 21^st century”.
Various discussions about metals, ceramics, nanomaterials, electronic materials, energy materials, and functional oxides were made during the workshop.

- Hyuck Mo Lee, a Professor from the Dept. MSE at KAIST won the 7^th LS Academy Award from the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials. Professor Lee was named as a recipient in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions to Materials Science and Engineering.

The First Wednesday Multidisciplinary forum between Dept. MSE and School of BTM were held on April 11 (wed), 2018.
The theme of the forum was “Tech Startup Talk Show with Professor-CEO Byeong-Soo Bae” and about 100 students attended.

2018 summer workshop was held at Gapyeong Anthi on June 21 ~ 22, 2018. Total of 28 professors and staff attended. They discussed on ongoing issues of the department.

Four undergraduates were selected for Dean's List of 2018 spring. The students with outstanding academic performance and innovative ideas are nominated to the list.

Four undergraduates were selected for the 2018 Character Scholarship. The scholarship is granted to undergraduates who practice exemplary behavior and public services.

2018 spring orientation and opening party for freshmen was held on March 8. At the opening party, many professors from our department attended and spent meaningful time with the freshmen.

Graduate Sports Day 2018 in the Dept. of MSE was held at Sports complex and on August 23 (Thu), 2018. The main events include football, basketball, table tennis, foot volleyball, badminton, a tug of war, etc. All participants were divided into four teams (A, B, C, and D teams).
The champion was awarded to the C team (Prof. Kyoung-Wook Paik, Do Kyung Kim, Duk Young Jeon, WooChul Jung, Steve Park, Jong Min Yuk, Kibum Kang, Kyung Min Kim) and the runner-up to the D team (Prof. Seokwoo Jeon, Chan beum Park, Jeung Ku Kang, Keon Jae Lee, Pyuck-Pa Choi, Byong-Guk Park and Hyuck Mo Lee). Lab Unity Award was given to Prof. Byeong-Soo Bae’s lab and Prof. Sung-Yoon Chung’s lab. After the event, a barbecue party was held in the lobby of Applied engineering building (W1).

A meeting with laboratory member in charge of safety was held on June 15, to raise safety consciousness and strengthen ties among them.

Mr. Junki Yoon started to work as a staff member in Dept. MSE from April 1, 2018. He received his B.S. from Dept. MSE in this February. He manages common equipment, asset, security, and webpage of the department.
