■ Abstract :

Perhaps, Africa is the last frontier as a continent of opportunity. Yet Korea lacks understanding and necessary data of the continent. It is not just a land of the Animal Kingdom. As frequent unrests, which are triggered by various economic interests stemmed from natural resources, attest throughout the modern history of Africa, its abundant natural resources attract competetive investment environment for China and Japan. Furthermore, Africa has been attracting interests as a tove of rare earth materials as more than half of the world’s carbonatites are found in Africa. One good example is the Nguala Rare Earth Project in Tanzania. It is considered the largest and highest grade undeveloped rare earth project outside China. There are challenge of capital and technology, though, which presents opportunities. This presentation will attempt to show natural, socio-economic and political environment of Tanzania and East Africa to a certain degree.
